My goal, for those of you who are curious, is to share a daily life lesson, tip, or hack. They are the things I want my children to know and the things that I teach to clients. They are the things that make my life easier, happier, and more productive. I hope you’ll follow along and find them helpful too.
Set a timer/alarm
My mother used an old egg timer to monitor our ‘corner time’ when we were being punished. When my girls were young I would set the stove timer and get everyone involved in a chore for 15 minutes – moving with the assumption that I could motivate them for at least a short period.
Today, I use the timer on my phone for a lot of different things. If I need to get out of the house at a particular time I ask Siri to set an alarm for a particular time – reminding me to be in the shower by then or finished up a project in a timely manner.
If I am trying to remember a new thought or refresh something I’ve lost track of (i.e. “breathe”, “stay focused”, etc.) I’ll set an alarm on my phone so that it goes off at specific times throughout the day as a reminder.
Technology makes reminders easy. For all of us who have Alexa or one of her counterparts in our home, it’s as easy as a spoken word to have an alarm remind us with those things we need help remembering. It’s as easy as that to set a timer as well. How many times have I started the tea kettle or put a slice of bread in the toaster just to get involved in something else?? Just the other day I came back into the kitchen to find my cast iron skillet ready to glow orange on my glass stove top. I had turned the burner on to dry it and then walked away – totally forgetting to come back to it. I’m lucky that the stove top survived and the house didn’t burn down! A quick shout out to Siri or Alexa would have prevented that issue!
