Love Yourself

In the pursuit of happiness and overall well-being, self love is practically a requirement. Our ability to look in the mirror and find peace with the reflection may be the ultimate experience of living a fulfilled life.

If it were easy, the mental health profession wouldn’t exist and so this suggestion is made with the knowledge that while some are on the path and some are comfortable and confident, there are more who avoid the concept, the practice, and perhaps even the idea of self love.

First Step

Maybe the first step is understanding that each of us is born perfect… has here ever been a baby born without perfect love and full of preciousness? We really are ‘born that way’. And then… our environment, and our experiences therein, teach us to think otherwise – true or not. And then we discover that we’ll never be perfect – a revelation that many of us find difficult to accept. Somehow we come to believe that we’ve failed, or that we simply ‘aren’t good enough’.

Lies

This may be the first lie that we tell ourselves. Perhaps the first lie that we believe. And, it keeps us from self acceptance – from self-love.

Philosophers and poets haven’t spoken about the importance of self-love for thousands of years by coincidence… it turns out to be a necessity of good relationships and of a good life. The ability to practice self-compassion and self-acceptance – components of self-love – are timeless. They apply to humans regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or socioeconomic status.

Get Started

If you’re not consistently on the path toward established self-love then it important for you to take a couple of simple steps. First, practice self compassion… speak kindly of yourself, forgive yourself, and let go of perfection. Secondly, practice self-care… take time for yourself, take care of your body, and raise your consciousness. Look in the mirror each day and speak to yourself as if you were your own best friend; say “I love you”.  Don’t worry if it feels uncomfortable to start. It gets easier as you learn to …

Love yourself.

I am a mental health counselor, a very proud mom of four great people whom I love to pieces and a grateful partner to a perfectly imperfect man who challenged me to be a better me. And, while I haven't always liked the things that life has dished out to me, I am eternally blessed by all its lessons. Sit with me as I learn and share at ThisIsLeslyn.com
