Embrace difference

Similar to acceptance, embracing differences is a specific contributor to feeling better about yourself and about the world in general. Embracing differences requires us to step out of our comfort zones, to ‘accept’ that our worldview is only one perspective.

We know this intellectually of course. We ‘know’ that there are ‘different strokes for different folks’ and yet we often struggle with the reality that the way I think or what I think is vastly different than someone else.

The solution, or the strategy for embracing differences is directly correlated to the concept of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. If we simply let go of the notion that what I think is ‘right’ – by definition, making the other ‘wrong’ – then we can see other forms of thought as merely different. The struggle comes with our belief that I may not be ‘good enough’ if I am not ‘right’.

In reality, there are perhaps dozens of ‘right’ viewpoints – all contextually unique. Consider the act of burping. The act of belching loudly while sitting around a dinner table would be regarded as quite rude in most of North American households, particularly if you were a guest or at a business function. However, in India – it is a demonstration of having enjoyed a good meal.

Instead of thinking of someone or something as being right or wrong as a general principle, explore the idea that it is simply different. This uncomplicated distinction eliminates a lot of judgment and unnecessary degradation. Befriend someone

Do you know someone who doesn’t have a big social circle? Do you know an older person who is lonely or actually… alone? Are you aware of someone who recently experienced a traumatic loss? Is there someone in your environment, at work or at church, who appears to be alone more often than not?

Are you able to share a piece of yourself? Do you have an hour a week to make a difference in someone’s life? Perhaps they could use a friend.

While carving out an hour from  your week may seem cumbersome or downright impossible, imagine bringing a summer of sunshine to someone else’s grey cloudy life. Imagine that someone chooses to live – actually makes the decision to stay alive – because you take an hour from your week to share kind thoughts and a little light. Imagine that someone counts the hours that pass by until your presence graces their path again next week.

Maybe it’s a kid who doesn’t have anything to go home to… or a widower who is tired of eating alone night after night. Your kind gesture to behave in a friendly manner to this person who may feel isolated and alone could mean the difference between a life of loneliness and a life of hope.

Be mindful of the people in your periphery. Pay close attention and then offer your friendship. It’s free to give and relatively cheap to maintain. The benefit is amazingly measurable when we take the time to…

For people with limited access to daytime sunshine due to working conditions, I often recommend that they eat lunch or take a break in their cars utilizing the same techniques.

My goal is to share a daily life lesson, tip, or hack. They are the things I want my children to know and the things that I teach to clients. They are the things that make my life easier, happier, and more productive. I hope you’ll follow along and find them helpful too.

Face the sun

This tip is specifically for those winter months or rainy grey days that may plague our mood or drain our sense of well-being. At those times – when the sun isn’t shining or is only accessible for a short time – our exposure becomes limited. It is likewise restricted for those of us who work indoors 7 to 8 hours a day, regardless of the time of year.

Exposure to sunshine helps our body produce vitamin D. Healthy vitamin D levels are essential to feeling good and when the sun is stubbornly hibernating, supplements may be helpful. An additional benefit to absorbing sun rays is the recent discovery that they promote immune function. Furthermore, sunlight supports the production of serotonin, another chemical that induces feelings of happiness.

When the sun IS shining, a helpful trick is to sit as close to a window as possible – assuming it is too cold to be outdoors – and position your face (eyes closed) toward the rays. Sit there as long as possible so that your skin can absorb as much of the vitamins and energy as possible. If the weather is nice of course, go outside so that there isn’t any barrier between you and the sun’s rays. I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you to wear sunscreen for this exercise regardless of the time of year. For people with limited access to daytime sunshine due to working conditions, I often recommend that they eat lunch or take a break in their cars utilizing the same techniques. If making time to ‘face’ the sunshine is literally unfeasible for some reason, a sun lamp is a fair alternative.

It’s important to note that people who are afflicted with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) have probably been advised of these techniques and yet they are advantageous for all of us – all year long.
